Building credit with ITIN — step-by-step 12-24 month guide
Having a good credit score (FICO 700+) in the US opens doors: mortgages, cars, better cards, rentals, even employment. As an immigrant with ITIN (no SSN), you can build credit from zero — it just takes more planning than a citizen.
How the US credit system works
Three agencies (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) collect information about your payments and debts. They calculate a FICO score (300-850):
- 800-850: Excellent
- 740-799: Very good
- 670-739: Good
- 580-669: Fair
- 300-579: Poor
As an ITIN holder, your credit builds the same way as a citizen with SSN — but some products won’t accept you until you have history.
Step-by-step plan (12-24 months)
Month 0: Prerequisites
✅ Active ITIN (verify at irs.gov) ✅ Checking account at a bank (Chime, Bank of America, etc.) — see banks that accept ITIN ✅ Stable US residential address (utility bill, lease)
Month 1-2: Self Credit Builder
Product #1: Self Credit Builder Account ($25-$48/month)
How it works:
- Apply at self.inc — accepts ITIN without requiring SSN
- Self lends you $600-$3,600 (depending on plan)
- Money held in a closed savings account (CD)
- You pay $25, $48, $89, or $150/month for 12-24 months
- Self reports your payments to Equifax, Experian, TransUnion monthly
- At end, receive accumulated money back (less interest)
Your first FICO score should appear around month 3-6 (typically 600-650).
Month 6: Secured credit card
Product #2: Secured credit card (accepts ITIN)
ITIN-accepting options:
- Discover It Secured — $200+ deposit = $200+ line, 1-2% cashback, no annual fee
- Capital One Quicksilver Secured — $200 deposit = $200 line, 1.5% cashback, no annual fee
- Self Visa Secured Card (after progressing on Self CB)
- OpenSky Secured Visa — accepts ITIN, no credit check
Optimal strategy:
- Apply to a secured card with $200-$500 deposit
- Use only 10-30% of your limit each month
- Pay in full each month (NOT just minimum)
- Set up auto-pay to never miss
Keep this card at least 6 months before applying for another.
Month 9: Verify score + second secured card
If your score is around 650-700:
- Request limit increase on current card
- Apply to second secured card from different issuer
- Or wait until month 12 for unsecured card
Month 12: Unsecured card + additional product
At 12 months, score should be 680-720. Time to:
Product #4: Traditional unsecured card
- Capital One Quicksilver (regular, not secured) — 1.5% cashback
- Discover It Cash Back — 5% rotating cashback
- Wells Fargo Active Cash — 2% on everything
- American Express Blue Cash Everyday
Month 18-24: Pre-approval for mortgage or auto
With 24 months solid history (3+ tradelines, no lates):
- Score: 720-760 expected
- Eligible for: ITIN mortgage (Wells Fargo, NACA), auto loan, premium cards
Critical rules (SAME for everyone, with or without SSN)
- NEVER pay late — one 30-day late drops 60-100 points
- Use < 30% of your limit
- DO NOT close old cards — age matters
- DO NOT apply to many cards at once — hard inquiries drop 5-10 points temporarily
- Monitor monthly — use Credit Karma (free)
When you have 720+ — what unlocks
- ITIN mortgage (Wells Fargo, NACA, FHA some states)
- Auto loans with good rates
- Premium cards with large sign-up bonuses
- Premium apartments without co-signer
- Better employability (some employers check credit)
