Current and ITIN — Current requires a Social Security number
Verdict (as of 2026-06-30): Current is not an ITIN option. Current’s own help center states: “Yes, Current requires a U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) to open an account.” Sign-up asks for an SSN, a U.S. residential address, and a smartphone for SMS verification. Current does not mention an ITIN anywhere on its own pages, so an ITIN cannot be used in place of the SSN.
Current is an app-only fintech, not a chartered bank itself — banking services are provided through partner banks (Choice Financial Group and Cross River Bank), and there are no physical branches.

What this means if you only have an ITIN
If your only U.S. taxpayer ID is an ITIN, you cannot complete Current’s sign-up, because Current’s help center requires a Social Security number. Selecting an “ITIN” or “Other Tax ID” option is not available on Current.
This does not mean you have no options. Other banks and fintechs do open accounts with an ITIN instead of an SSN. Start with our comparison page to see which institutions accept an ITIN and what each one asks for, then confirm the current requirements directly with the institution before you apply.
How to open a Current account (SSN required)
- Confirm you have a U.S. Social Security number — Current requires one and does not accept an ITIN in its place.
- Install the Current app on a smartphone (Current is app-only).
- Enter your SSN and personal details so Current can verify your identity.
- Provide a U.S. residential street address. Current does not accept P.O. boxes.
- Complete SMS verification on your smartphone and wait for the account decision.
If you do not have an SSN, stop here and use the ITIN bank comparison instead.
