Argentine birth certificate (partida) from the US: how to request it
Argentine consulates do not issue the partida de nacimiento (Argentine birth record). It is issued by the Civil Registry of the province where the birth took place: “en la Argentina cada provincia cuenta con su propio Registro” (in Argentina each province has its own registry), the Los Angeles consulate explains, and partidas must be requested by the person directly from the Civil Registry of the place where the event occurred. From the United States you request it online (where the province offers it), through a relative in Argentina or through a private agent (gestor). Each province sets the cost: the consular pages checked on October 3, 2026 do not publish an amount. The same applies to marriage and death partidas recorded in Argentina.

What the consulate does and does not do
Every office checked says the same thing in different words:
- Embassy in Washington (18/11/2025): civil-status partidas are not processed at Argentine consular offices abroad.
- New York (09/09/2026): the consulate “no diligencia ni realiza solicitudes, rectificaciones u otros trámites relativos a partidas nacimiento, matrimonio o defunción” (does not request, correct or otherwise process birth, marriage or death partidas). Obtaining them is a private matter, at the person’s own expense.
- Houston (29/01/2026): “ESTE CONSULADO NO GESTIONA LA EMISION DE PARTIDAS DE ESTADO CIVIL”. It adds that each province’s civil registry follows a different system for handling and delivering partidas.
- Chicago (12/11/2025): the request must be made directly by the interested person to the relevant bodies.
That includes corrections: if the partida has an error, the New York consulate says it does not handle rectifications either; it is up to the person to deal with the relevant Civil Registry office.
How to request it from the United States
The Atlanta consulate (19/03/2025) lists three routes:
- Through a relative in Argentina who goes to the Civil Registry of the relevant province.
- Through a private agent (gestor privado).
- Online, on the provincial civil registry’s website.
The Los Angeles consulate (25/08/2025) notes that a growing number of provinces offer an online service and that, if you cannot get the partida online, you will need acquaintances or agents who do it in person on your behalf. The New York consulate adds that in many provinces civil registries issue partidas in electronic form with a digital signature, while still issuing paper ones with a handwritten signature.
Buenos Aires City online requests
The CABA record-request page gives these local rules (checked October 17, 2026):
- This online procedure covers only births, deaths and marriages registered in Buenos Aires City. A miBA username and password are required.
- Regular delivery is 15 business days; urgent delivery is 3 business days and requires an additional payment.
- The request does not include legalization or apostille.
The 24 civil registries: where to find yours
RENAPER publishes the page “Atención y canales de contacto de Registros Civiles provinciales”, with each registry’s website. The jurisdictions are: Buenos Aires (province), Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (CABA), Catamarca, Chaco, Chubut, Córdoba, Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Formosa, Jujuy, La Pampa, La Rioja, Mendoza, Misiones, Neuquén, Río Negro, Salta, San Juan, San Luis, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Santiago del Estero, Tierra del Fuego (Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur) and Tucumán.
Use RENAPER’s list: provincial civil registries. The tables published by the Embassy in Washington and the Chicago consulate disagree on some addresses (CABA’s, for example), and the Houston consulate warns that its links to the provinces may change without notice.
A partida, not a “birth certificate”
For Argentine consular procedures the difference matters:
- For a minor’s DNI or passport, the Embassy in Washington asks for the “Partida de nacimiento de la República Argentina original (NO CERTIFICADO DE NACIMIENTO)” and, if you don’t have one, says to request an updated digital partida from the registry where the birth was recorded.
- On its nationality-option page the Embassy says: “El Registro Civil y el RENAPER no aceptan certificados de nacimiento” (the Civil Registry and RENAPER do not accept birth certificates), so the digital partida must be requested online.
- The Miami consulate uses the same note: “Partida de Nacimiento (NO CERTIFICADO)”.
Digital partidas and how recent they must be
The Los Angeles and Houston consulates say that “Las partidas digitales, descargadas como PDF de los Registros Civiles argentinos digitalizados, funcionan como originales” (digital partidas downloaded as PDFs work as originals). Keep the file exactly as downloaded: if you later need an apostille, the New York consulate asks for digital documents with a verifiable signature panel and recommends not altering the files in any way, including their file name, because that can affect the digital signature.
Several procedures require a recent partida:
| Procedure | Maximum age | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| Nationality option (the Argentine parent’s partida) | No more than 6 months | Houston consulate |
| Travel permit for a minor | Issued in the last 6 months | Los Angeles consulate |
| First DNI (never had one) | Issued within the last 6 months | RENAPER |
If the partida is for registering a US-born child as Argentine, see register a US-born child.
Apostille: when you need it
- For US authorities: “Si usted va a presentar la partida a autoridades estadounidenses, probablemente le pidan que sea legalizada mediante la Apostilla de La Haya argentina” (if you will present it to US authorities, they will probably ask for the Argentine Hague Apostille) — Los Angeles consulate; Atlanta publishes the same warning.
- At the consulate, for the nationality option: the Los Angeles consulate says the parent’s partida does not require the Argentine apostille, and Houston says it requires no legalization.
An Argentine partida is apostilled through the Foreign Ministry’s TAD platform, at a Colegio de Escribanos (notaries’ association) or through a consulate, with costs that differ by office. See apostille of Argentine documents from the US.
Marriages and deaths that happened in the US
This page covers partidas for events recorded in Argentina. If the event happened in the United States, the path is different:
- Death of an Argentine in the US: the consulate for that district registers it; see death registration and repatriation of remains.
- Marriage celebrated in the US: it is registered through a court process in Argentina; see registering a US marriage in Argentina.
- US records (for example, the birth certificate of a child born here): these are not Argentine documents; see vital records by state.
