Argentine emergency passport in the US: USD 40 or 80, plus provisional

If your Argentine passport was lost, stolen or has expired and you must travel before a new one arrives, Argentine consulates in the US issue two different documents. The Serie A provisional passport is an official single sheet valid for 60 days, only to return to Argentina, and costs USD 30 (New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta consulates). The emergency passport can be used for any destination, is valid for up to one year, is authorized by the consul case by case, and its fee varies by consulate: USD 40 at the Embassy in Washington and in Atlanta, and USD 80 in New York (checked October 3, 2026). The ordinary passport is a separate application.

Fees: why the emergency passport has two prices

The consulate pages do not agree on the emergency passport fee:

  • Embassy in Washington: ‘valor del trámite USD $ 40’ (page updated 14/11/2025).
  • Atlanta consulate: ‘Arancel del trámite USD40’ (updated 26/11/2025).
  • Houston consulate: its fee table lists ‘Expedir pasaporte de emergencia 40’.
  • Chicago consulate: ‘US$ 40’ plus ‘US$ 40 debido a la emergencia’ (due to the emergency), by credit or debit card (updated 18/11/2025).
  • New York consulate: ‘Costo del trámite: USD 80’, by debit card or money order payable to ‘Consulate General of Argentina in New York’; ‘No se aceptan cheques ni dinero en efectivo’ (no checks or cash) (updated 04/08/2025).

Where the consulate requires applying for the ordinary passport at the same time, that fee also applies: the Embassy in Washington publishes USD 165 for the ordinary passport. See renew an Argentine passport in the US.

Serie A provisional passport (to return to Argentina)

The Los Angeles consulate describes it as an official sheet ‘válida por 60 días al solo efecto de volver a la Argentina’ (valid for 60 days solely to return to Argentina), issued to Argentine citizens who can prove their nationality (for example, with an expired passport) and show with a ticket that the trip is imminent.

Requirements for adults (Los Angeles, Atlanta and New York):

  • A ticket to Argentina already purchased, with an imminent date. ‘No es válida una reserva’ (a reservation is not valid) (Los Angeles).
  • A 1.5 x 1.5 inch (4 x 4 cm) color photo, front-facing, white background, no glasses.
  • Your Argentine DNI and previous passport; if it was lost or stolen, the police report. Atlanta also asks for the details of your last passport (number, issue date and issuing authority) if you have them.
  • Atlanta: a note to the consulate explaining that the trip is imminent and the date cannot be changed.
  • New York: complete the online form and bring the confirmation number. The consulate warns that many police stations ask for a note from the consulate before taking the report.

Allowed connections. Los Angeles: nonstop or technical stops that do not involve clearing customs, and no stop in Mexico, ‘que no acepta este pasaporte’ (which does not accept this passport). Atlanta: nonstop or technical stops that do not involve passing through immigration in third countries. Miami: a direct flight or a single stop of no more than 6 hours.

Minors under 18: also a birth record (Atlanta specifies it accepts only partidas, not certificates) and the presence of both parents with their documents, or the corresponding travel authorization (venia). See minor travel authorization.

How to request it:

  1. New York: book by email at cnyor-tramites@mrecic.gov.ar.
  2. Los Angeles: online form; the consulate reviews the request, replies by email and hands over the passport on the day of the appointment.
  3. Atlanta: email a photo or scan of all documents with the subject ‘Solicitud pasaporte provisorio’ and your name; the consulate assigns an appointment to present the originals.
  4. Miami: for people in the US as tourists whose passport was stolen or lost, come in on a business day at 8:30 am with the ticket and a passport-size color photo. The consulate gives the amount once the itinerary is confirmed.

Fee exemption. Decree 266/2000 (consular fees), article 7, item 7.7.4, exempts the provisional passport in cases of theft or loss of travel documents when inability to pay the fee is shown, and item 7.7.5 exempts the provisional passport for repatriation. Ask your consulate how it applies this.

Emergency passport (any destination)

The New York consulate limits it to cases where a person needs a valid travel document and cannot wait for their biometric passport because of ‘CIRCUNSTANCIAS EXCEPCIONALES POR RAZONES DE EMERGENCIA, CASO FORTUITO O FUERZA MAYOR’ (exceptional circumstances of emergency, unforeseeable events or force majeure). Chicago gives a natural disaster or a risk to life as examples, and says ‘Cada caso será evaluado por el Cónsul’ (each case is evaluated by the consul).

Rules the consulates publish:

  • Valid for up to one year (New York, Atlanta, Chicago). Atlanta: ’no pueden ser prorrogados’ (cannot be extended).
  • Chicago: ‘Se emitirá por ÚNICA vez cada 5 años’ (issued only once every 5 years).
  • Washington: residents of its district must apply ‘conjuntamente con el Pasaporte Ordinario’ (together with the ordinary passport). Atlanta: applying for the ordinary passport at the same time is mandatory for residents of its district. Chicago: if you are traveling to a third country, you must apply for the biometric passport at the same time.
  • Outdated DNI: Washington says that if you lack the adult update or have no DNI, you must first process the DNI and wait to receive it. Atlanta says something similar for people over 18. See Argentine DNI from the US.

Documents (Washington, Atlanta, Chicago and New York):

  • Proof of the emergency: tickets, a letter from your employer, a medical certificate, a court date (Washington); New York also mentions a letter from a lawyer.
  • Expired or damaged passport or one with no blank pages, or the police report if it was lost or stolen.
  • Updated DNI.
  • Washington: a recent passport-type photo only if the consular authority asks for it.
  • Minors: both parents present and the minor’s original Argentine partida de nacimiento (not a birth certificate). Chicago requires Argentine parents to prove identity with the DNI, not the passport.

How to request it in New York. ’exclusivamente por correo electrónico’ (by email only) to cnyor-tramites@mrecic.gov.ar, with the subject ‘Solicitud de pasaporte de emergencia’, your full name, date of birth, DNI number, address, where you are at the time of the request and the reasons, with the proof attached. The consulate says incomplete requests are not answered and that, if it authorizes the procedure, it tells you the day and time to come in. In Washington, the Embassy says questions and appointments go by email to consular@embassyofargentina.us.

What the New York consulate’s emergency passport page says (checked October 16, 2026)

From the New York consulate’s emergency passport page (updated 04/08/2025):

  • Contact: 12 West 56 Street, New York, ZIP 10019; tel. 1 212 603 0400; cnyor@mrecic.gov.ar. Emergency requests go only to cnyor-tramites@mrecic.gov.ar.
  • Attachments to the email: the proof of the emergency, plus a copy of your DNI and passport ‘siempre que ello sea posible’ (where possible).
  • Online form: everyone doing a procedure at the consulate must complete the online form (SIIC On Line, Adelanto de Datos Online) and present the confirmation number.
  • At the appointment (only if the consulate authorizes it): original and photocopy of your last updated DNI, if you have one; original and copy of your last passport, or a police report showing your full name, the report number and the details of the loss; the ticket when the emergency is travel-related; the proof sent by email. An original and photocopy of the birth record or nationality option act is recommended.
  • Biometric passport rules also apply: issuance is subject to the biometric passport requirements, ‘siempre que sean aplicables’ (where applicable). The consular authorization is separate from the one RENAPER ‘puede o no otorgar’ (may or may not grant) to issue the document.
  • Minors under 18: original and photocopy of the Argentine birth record or nationality option; original and photocopy of the documents of the people with parental responsibility, who must be present. If one or both cannot attend: a power, authorization or valid travel venia, apostilled if granted outside Argentina, in which the absent person ‘debe expresamente autorizar la expedición del pasaporte’ (must expressly authorize issuing the passport). If a parent died or lost parental responsibility: the death record or the public instrument proving it and, where applicable, the court ruling naming a guardian.
  • Destination country: the consulate recommends checking with the destination authorities on the document’s usefulness before applying.
  • Fee: ‘Costo del trámite: USD 80’, by debit card or money order; no checks or cash.

Published payment methods

  • New York: debit card or money order; no checks or cash.
  • Atlanta: electronic payment by card (3.25% surcharge) or an in-person deposit at Ameris Bank with the payment slip the consulate gives you; no checks.
  • Chicago: credit or debit card.

What you cannot do from the US

  • Express or instant passport: ‘En sede consular no pueden tramitarse Pasaportes Express o Al Instante. Estos trámites solo se realizan en la República Argentina’ (Embassy in Washington).
  • Assume a ticket is enough: according to New York, having tickets issued ’no es de por sí prueba de una emergencia’.
  • Undo the block on your previous passport: the Miami consulate warns that the previous passport is blocked when you apply for a new one and that the block cannot be reversed. Plan your trip before you apply.

Your US immigration status

These passports are issued on the basis of Argentine nationality. The consulate pages checked on October 3, 2026 ask for Argentine documents, a ticket and proof of the emergency; none asks for a US immigration document. What each destination or transit country accepts is that country’s decision.
