Voting from the US — Argentina elections from abroad

Argentines living in the United States can vote in Argentina’s national elections without traveling, either in person at their consulate or by mail. The key step is not a voter registration form: it is having your US address recorded on your DNI, which enrolls you automatically in the register of voters residing abroad. Voting from abroad is optional and open from age 16 (all facts below from official pages read October 3, 2026).

Who can vote from abroad

Per the electoral FAQ published at electoral.gob.ar, Argentines residing abroad can vote if they:

  • “Tengan 16 años o más.”
  • “Posean su domicilio en el exterior asentado en el DNI (al menos, 180 días antes de la elección general).”
  • “Estén incluidos/as en el padrón electoral.”

“No, el voto de los electores residentes en el exterior es de carácter optativo.”

What elections you can vote in

National offices only: “presidente y vice, parlamentarios del Mercosur, diputados y senadores nacionales. El instrumento de sufragio es la boleta única de papel” (Dirección Nacional Electoral, argentina.gob.ar). Your vote counts for the district (province or the City of Buenos Aires) of your last address in Argentina; if that cannot be determined, your place of birth in Argentina, and failing that your parents’ last address (electoral FAQ).

Enrollment is automatic — through your DNI address

“Los argentinos residentes en el exterior que tengan registrado el cambio de domicilio en su DNI argentino no tendrán que realizar ningún trámite de empadronamiento para votar ya que se encuentran incorporados automáticamente en el Registro de Electores Residentes en el Exterior.”

So the procedure to “register” is the DNI change of address, done at the consulate that covers where you live. RENAPER: “el cambio de domicilio en el DNI es imprescindible para ser incorporado/a al padrón electoral del Consulado”. The Washington embassy also reminds that “Todos los ciudadanos argentinos están obligados a comunicar el cambio de domicilio, dentro de los treinta días de haberse producido la novedad (Ley 17.671 -artículo 47).” See Argentina DNI from the US.

For the 2027 elections (Washington embassy): you can check the provisional roll “entre el 1 y el 30 de noviembre de 2026 en el sitio www.padron.gob.ar” and file a claim there if your data is wrong. Young people “nacidos hasta el 24/10/2011” must have completed the DNI “Actualización de Mayor”; if not, the embassy says to do it at the consulate “con la mayor urgencia”.

How you vote

  • In person — “La votación se realiza el día de los comicios generales, en el horario establecido para el acto electoral, en la sede de la representación diplomática o consular argentina correspondiente al domicilio asentado en el DNI.” Los Angeles, for example, states its polling tables open from 8 AM to 6 PM local time on election days.
  • By mail — only “previa inscripción”: the sign-up window runs “desde 150 días hasta 120 días antes de la elección general” through the form at https://www.padron.gov.ar/cne_care/. The return envelope is sent “sin costo” to the consulate, or dropped in the boxes installed at the consulates. Postal votes count if received “hasta el día hábil anterior al inicio de la jornada electoral”.
  • Postal and in-person don’t mix — “los electores registrados para votar por correo postal no están habilitados para sufragar en forma presencial”.
  • No internet voting — the electoral FAQ lists only in-person and postal voting.

Identification at the polling station

“El único documento válido para votar es el DNI. El votante debe utilizar su último DNI” (Los Angeles); Atlanta: bring your “último DNI vigente”. Chicago: “El pasaporte no es un documento habilitante para votar” (page dated 31/01/2020).

If you cannot vote abroad

Travelers and residents abroad whose DNI does not show their foreign address “no están habilitados a votar en el exterior y deberán justificar la no emisión del voto” (electoral FAQ). The Atlanta consulate says people registered in Argentina who are abroad on election day can justify not voting “durante los 60 días posteriores a la fecha de la elección” online at infractores.padron.gov.ar, without going in person.

Your US status

The Argentine official sources we read say nothing about US immigration status, and we found no official source on whether Argentine consulates or electoral authorities share voter data with US agencies, so we make no claim either way.
