Colombian pension proof of life from the US: free, every 6 months

If you receive a Colombian pension and live in the United States, you must prove you are alive (fe de vida or supervivencia) every six months, under Article 87 of Law 2136 of 2021. There are two routes: at the Colombian consulate covering where you live, where it is free, or before a US public authority, with the document apostilled. For people paid through Colpensiones, official sources disagree on one point: Colpensiones says the Cancillería forwards the consular certificate, while the Orlando consulate reported that since August 1, 2025 each pensioner must file it personally on the Colpensiones online portal (checked October 3, 2026).

What the law says

The Cancillería quotes Article 87 of Law 2136 of 2021, which amended Article 22 of Decree-Law 019 of 2012: ‘In all cases, the proof of life (survival) of nationals outside the country shall be proven before the entities that form part of the Comprehensive Social Security System every six (6) months through one of the following options:

  • Before the consulate of the district where the national is located.
  • Before a public authority of the place where the national is located.’

In the text Colpensiones quotes, under the consular route the consul issues the certificate ‘based on the means that, in their judgment, give them certainty of the applicant’s vital status’ and sends it to the social security entity.

Route 1: at the consulate (free)

Requirements (Cancillería):

  • Personal appearance at the consulate.
  • Yellow cédula with holograms or a valid Colombian passport.
  • If you cannot appear in person, the Cancillería says you can contact the consulate ’to be guided through the procedure and learn which documents you must provide’.

Cost: ‘The procedure at the consulate is free’ (Cancillería). The Newark consulate lists ‘Certificación de fe de vida $0’ in its 2026 fees.

Appointment: depends on the consulate. The New York consulate lists ‘Certificados de supervivencia’ among walk-in procedures, with service hours of 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and notes that on Tuesdays walk-in service is only for nationals over 62. For other offices, see Colombian consulates in the US and the consulate appointment tracker.

Route 2: before a US public authority

The Cancillería explains that if you go before a local authority, ’the interested party must apostille or legalize the document that authority issues, and send it to the address and office the respective social security entity designates’. The sources reviewed do not say which US authority or document format each entity accepts; confirm with your pension entity first. For the US apostille, see how to apostille a US document.

Filing with Colpensiones: two official versions

SourceWhat it says
Colpensiones, ‘Pensioners abroad’ page (last modified September 20, 2023)‘If you did the procedure at the Consulate where you live, the Cancillería will send the certificate directly to Colpensiones.’ If you did not do it at a consulate, you file it on the online portal.
Colpensiones, FAQ for people abroad (last modified January 8, 2025)The consulate sends the certificate directly to Colpensiones; the pensioner can also send it to pensionadosexterior@colpensiones.gov.co.
Colombian consulate in Orlando, September 18, 2025‘Colpensiones informed all Colombian consular missions abroad that, starting August 1, 2025, proof-of-life certificates abroad must be filed directly by citizens, through that entity’s online portal.’

The two Colpensiones pages were last modified in September 2023 and January 2025; the Orlando notice, from September 2025, is the most recent of the three. Relying on the consulate to forward the certificate depends on the Colpensiones version still being current; the Orlando notice says to file it yourself on the portal, and the Colpensiones FAQ says a pensioner can also send it directly by email. Confirm with Colpensiones which channel it is using.

How to file on the online portal

Per Colpensiones:

  1. Log in at sede.colpensiones.gov.co with document type (cédula de ciudadanía or cédula de extranjería), number and password. If you are not registered, registration starts from the ‘Zona Transaccional’ section of the Colpensiones site.
  2. Choose the procedure ‘Control de Supervivencia Pensionados Residentes en el Exterior’.
  3. Fill in the fields and upload the documents.
  4. Keep the filing number (radicado) to track it.

The Orlando consulate adds that if you run into trouble, Colpensiones offers Colombians abroad video call, chat and email channels from its pensioners-abroad page.

Other pension entities

The law applies to all entities in the Comprehensive Social Security System. The sources on this page describe the Colpensiones process; if another entity pays your pension, ask it which channel it uses to receive the certificate.

Apostille of the consular certificate

If another entity asks for the proof-of-life certificate with an apostille, the Cancillería lists the ‘Certificación fe de vida’ signed by a Colombian consul (since July 1, 2016) among the documents that can be apostilled online. See apostille Colombian documents from the US.

Useful facts about receiving the pension abroad (Colpensiones)

  • Colpensiones transfers the payment to a partner bank in Colombia, which pays it to the foreign bank you designate. That Colombian bank deducts eight dollars (USD $8) per transfer, except for pensions under international agreements.
  • You can be paid monthly or quarterly; the transfer is made on the last business day of the month or quarter.
  • Payment is issued in pesos and converted to dollars at the TRM (official exchange rate) on the transfer date.
  • Colpensiones notes that proof-of-life filings for pensioners abroad resumed on July 1, 2022, after the health emergency ended.

Your US immigration status

The Cancillería requirements for proof of life at the consulate are personal appearance and a Colombian cédula or passport. They do not ask for US immigration documents.
