Register a US marriage in El Salvador: free on time, $5 late fine
If you are Salvadoran and you married in the United States, that marriage can be entered in El Salvador’s civil registry (Registro del Estado Familiar) through a Salvadoran consulate. The Foreign Ministry (Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores) says any marriage of Salvadorans that took place abroad can be registered at the embassy or consulate for the place where it happened or the one nearest your residence. Registration within the legal term is exempt from payment; more than six months after the marriage there is a US$5.00 fine, and the consular certificate costs US$10.00 (fees published by the Foreign Ministry on its page updated July 10, 2024, checked October 3, 2026).
Registration costs
The Foreign Ministry explains that consular officers charge the fees set in Art. 212-Bis of the Consular Service Organic Law (Ley Orgánica del Servicio Consular), in US dollars:
| Item | Cost (Foreign Ministry, checked October 3, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Registering the marriage within the legal term | Exempt from payment |
| Registering more than six months after the marriage | US$5.00 fine |
| Issuing a consular civil-registry certificate | US$10.00 |
The law text matches: its fee table lists entering a record “within the legal term” as exempt, registration “after six months from the event” with a US$5.00 fine, and a civil-registry certificate at US$10.00.
Documents the consulate asks for
From the Foreign Ministry’s list for marriage registration:
| Document | Detail |
|---|---|
| US marriage certificate | The foreign marriage certificate, in original |
| Spouses’ identification | Identification documents of both spouses, in original |
| Birth certificates | Birth certificate of both spouses, in original |
| If a non-relative files it | Must prove legal, conventional or judicial representation and show an original, valid ID |
Two practical notes on that list:
- The US marriage certificate is issued by the state or county where you married, not by the consulate. See how to order it in our vital records by state guide.
- The Salvadoran birth certificate is issued by the RNPN and can be ordered online; see El Salvador birth certificate from the US. The Foreign Ministry’s registration page sets no maximum age for that certificate; other consular procedures do, so confirm with the consulate.
Step by step
- Order your certified marriage record from the vital records office of the state or county where you married.
- Gather both spouses’ documents: original ID and original birth certificate.
- Book an appointment on the Foreign Ministry’s Portal de Citas, which lists “Registros del Estado Familiar” among its bookable services. You can also use the Consulado Virtual line (1-888-301-1130) or our consulate appointment tracker.
- Go to the consulate for the place where you married or the one nearest your residence — see El Salvador consulates in the US or search by state.
- Pay what applies: nothing within the legal term; a US$5.00 fine if more than six months have passed since the wedding.
- Request the consular certificate (US$10.00) if you need a document showing the registration.
The six-month line
The fee table charges nothing for registration within the legal term and applies the US$5.00 fine when registration happens more than six months after the event. In other words, a marriage celebrated years ago in the US can still be registered; what changes is the fine. The Foreign Ministry’s page mentions no additional surcharge per year of delay.
Why registration matters: DUI and passport
Registering the marriage connects to other Salvadoran documents:
- DUI: the dui.sv requirements page says that to update marital status “it is not necessary to present a birth certificate, since the RNPN has this information in its registry,” and asks applicants to make sure their marital status is registered in the corresponding civil registry before going to the DUI center. See the DUI at Salvadoran consulates and renewing the DUI online.
- Passport: the Foreign Ministry’s passport page says that if you change your name or marital status, you must present a valid DUI that has been updated when you renew. See Salvadoran passport renewal.
Does the US certificate need an apostille?
The civil-registry page does not list an apostille among the requirements for registration at the consulate. For US documents that will take effect in El Salvador generally, the Foreign Ministry explains that a document from a Hague Convention member country gets the apostille from that country’s designated authority and, once apostilled, needs no further step at the Salvadoran consulate or the Foreign Ministry. The US process is in apostille a document; Salvadoran documents are covered in apostille of Salvadoran documents. Ask the consulate whether your case requires it.
Your US immigration status
The Foreign Ministry’s document list for this procedure includes no US immigration document: it asks for the spouses’ identification, the foreign marriage certificate and the birth certificates. Registration is an act of the Salvadoran civil registry.
