Voting from the US — Guatemala elections from abroad

Guatemalan citizens living in the United States can vote from abroad for President and Vice President, in person, under Guatemala’s Electoral and Political Parties Law; the TSE sets the rules and deadlines for each election.

This page summarizes voting-from-abroad procedures categorically. For each specific election, verify current rules and deadlines with the TSE at https://tse.org.gt/ — registration windows close weeks or months before election day, and missing the deadline means you cannot vote.

What elections you can vote in

Guatemala’s Electoral and Political Parties Law (Art. 12) gives citizens abroad the vote for President and Vice President, cast on the same date as the election in Guatemala. Guatemala’s official newspaper, reporting the TSE’s 2027 rules, states that voters abroad may vote only for those two offices (Diario de Centro América, July 28, 2026).

Voter registration

You must register to vote from abroad before the registration deadline set for each election. Do not assume a short window: the TSE sets the closing dates, and it has changed them before — its current magistrates amended the vote-abroad regulation through Acuerdo 7-2022, changing the closing dates for citizens abroad to update their electoral residence (TSE). Check the TSE for the specific election rather than working backwards from election day.

In Guatemala, registration (empadronamiento) is handled by the electoral tribunal, the TSE (Tribunal Supremo Electoral):

  • DPI or valid Guatemalan passport — the TSE’s rules for the 2027 election accept either one to register and to identify yourself to vote (Diario de Centro América, July 28, 2026)
  • Registration with the TSE — its Unit for Voting Abroad held data-update and registration drives in ten US cities in the second half of 2025 and planned more for 2026 (TSE)

How you vote

Guatemala’s vote abroad is in person, at voting centers the TSE sets up in the US, on the same date as the election in Guatemala (Art. 12). For the 2027 general election, the TSE’s reformed vote-abroad regulation lets anyone on the single overseas voter roll vote at any enabled center abroad, whatever city they registered in (Diario de Centro América, July 28, 2026). As of October 3, 2026 we found no official source for a postal or internet voting channel for Guatemala.

Does voting in a Guatemala election affect US citizenship?

Voting in a foreign election is not among the acts that US law says can cost a US citizen their nationality, and those acts count only if done with the intention of giving up US nationality (8 U.S.C. 1481). We found no official source on whether voting abroad has any effect on a non-citizen’s US immigration status, so we make no claim either way.
