Honduras matrícula consular + DNI at US consulates

Honduras’s official procedures portal (DIGER) lists a consular identification card, the Tarjeta de Matrícula Consular, as a Foreign Ministry procedure — though as of October 3, 2026 it does not appear on the Embassy of Honduras’s list of consular services in the US. Honduran consulates in the US also do something many readers find more useful — they enroll citizens for the DNI, Honduras’s national identity document, through the Registro Nacional de las Personas (RNP).

The Tarjeta de Matrícula Consular

  • What it is: DIGER describes it as an identification document for a Honduran in the country where they live, which does not replace the identity card (DNI) or the passport, and which registers the national at the consular office regardless of immigration status.
  • Requirements (DIGER): appear in person; fill in the application form under oath; prove nationality with your identity card or, failing that, a birth certificate plus an official photo ID; prove your address with a recent utility bill or similar receipt; pay by money order; book at citaconsular.sreci.gob.hn.
  • Validity: not stated on the DIGER procedure page (checked October 3, 2026).
  • Fee: confirm the current fee with your consulate. Figures circulating online come from secondary sources, so we do not publish a number here.
  • Availability: as of October 3, 2026 the matrícula consular is not on the Embassy of Honduras’s list of consular services in the US — confirm with your consulate that it issues the card before booking travel to an appointment.

What the card is — and isn’t

The matrícula consular is a legitimate, government-issued identity document. It is not:

  • A US immigration document — it does not confer or affect your US immigration status
  • A REAL ID — TSA does not accept it as identification at the airport checkpoint. Since February 1, 2026, TSA says that if you cannot present an acceptable ID “you will have the option to pay a $45 fee to use TSA ConfirmID” so it can try to verify your identity — and if it cannot, you are not allowed through (tsa.gov). Your valid foreign passport is on TSA’s acceptable-ID list, so fly with the passport. The consular ID also does not open REAL ID-restricted federal buildings
  • A driver license — driving requires a separate state DMV process

The DNI — Honduras’s national ID, available at US consulates

Honduran consulates in the US enroll citizens for the DNI through the RNP:

  • Available at Honduran consulates in the US — the Embassy of Honduras’s directory lists 19 consular offices (hondurasemb.org/consulados, read September 24, 2026); confirm DNI enrollment with yours
  • First-time enrollment is free (US$0 on the Embassy of Honduras list, October 3, 2026)
  • Delivery time: we found no official figure for a DNI enrolled at a US consulate — ask yours

For many purposes back in Honduras (and as a second government ID alongside your passport), the DNI is the document that matters most.

The Embassy’s DNI enrollment requirements add these details (checked October 17, 2026):

  • Accepted documents: a previous Honduran identity card, Honduran passport or Honduran birth record.
  • An applicant over 18 who has never requested a DNI attends with a Honduran witness who confirms their identity; a witness who is a relative must be within the fourth degree of consanguinity.
  • Replacing a lost DNI costs $25 (USD).
  • Enrollment captures fingerprints, photograph and signature, and updates personal and residence data.

Appointments

Book through the platform the Embassy of Honduras booking page links for your office (checked October 3, 2026): citaconsular.sreci.gob.hn for Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, McAllen, Miami, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, DC — the system DIGER names for the matrícula — and asuntosconsulares.inm.gob.hn for Aurora, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Pittsburgh and Tampa; the Houston consulate serves walk-ins. For the matrícula, DIGER lists your identity card (or a birth certificate plus an official photo ID) and a recent receipt showing your address.

Will US institutions accept the Honduran matrícula?

Be careful with categorical claims here. Under USA PATRIOT Act Section 326 (31 CFR 1020.220), each US bank sets its own customer-identification policy and decides which foreign-government photo IDs it accepts. Mexico’s matrícula has documented broad acceptance; acceptance of the Honduran card has not been confirmed bank-by-bank — ask the specific branch before relying on it, and bring your Honduran passport as the stronger primary document.

The same logic applies at state DMVs: accepted-document lists vary by state. Check your state’s list before assuming the matrícula qualifies.
