Honduras is one of the Latin American countries that does issue a consular identification card in the United States: the Tarjeta de Matrícula Consular, valid for 2 years. Honduran consulates in the US also do something many readers find more useful — they enroll citizens for the DNI, Honduras’s national identity document, through the Registro Nacional de las Personas (RNP).

The Tarjeta de Matrícula Consular

What the card is — and isn’t

The matrícula consular is a legitimate, government-issued identity document. It is not:

  • A US immigration document — it does not confer or affect your US immigration status
  • A REAL ID — it cannot be used to board domestic US flights or enter federal buildings requiring REAL ID
  • A driver license — driving requires a separate state DMV process

The DNI — Honduras’s national ID, available at all 14 US consulates

Will US institutions accept the Honduran matrícula?

Be careful with categorical claims here. Under USA PATRIOT Act Section 326 (31 CFR 1020.220), each US bank sets its own customer-identification policy and decides which foreign-government photo IDs it accepts. Mexico’s matrícula has documented broad acceptance; acceptance of the Honduran card has not been confirmed bank-by-bank — ask the specific branch before relying on it, and bring your Honduran passport as the stronger primary document.
