Apostille Honduran documents from the US via SRECI online
Apostilles for Honduran documents are issued by Honduras’s Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores y Cooperación Internacional (SRECI) — the foreign ministry — through its Sección de Auténticas y Apostillas. From the United States you can request one online, on SRECI’s SOL portal, and the apostille arrives by email in electronic format. The key condition: before the apostille, the document must be authenticated by the Honduran institution that issued it.
Apostille or auténtica
SRECI’s instructions describe the service as certifying “la autenticidad de una firma, la calidad en que el signatario del documento haya actuado” — the authenticity of a signature, the capacity in which the signer acted and, where applicable, the seal or stamp on the document. It issues two different things:
- Apostille: for documents that will take legal effect in a country that is a party to the Convention of October 5, 1961.
- Auténtica: for documents going to a country that is not a party to that Convention, and also for documents signed by Honduran consular or diplomatic officials abroad that will take effect in Honduras.
The official Hague Conference (HCCH) status table lists Honduras with accession on January 20, 2004 and the Convention in force from September 30, 2004, and the United States in force from October 15, 1981. So under that rule, a Honduran document for use in the US gets an apostille.

Step 1: the prior authentication
This is where most requests stall. SRECI says it in two places: its instructions (“previo a solicitar una apostilla, el documento debe estar autenticado por la Secretaría General o autoridad competente de la entidad que emite el documento”) and its FAQ page, which says every public document issued in Honduras must be legalized by the Secretaría General of the corresponding institution before it is presented to the apostille unit.
In practice, each institution has its own authentication step. Two examples from this guide series:
- The Judiciary’s criminal record certificate is sold online together with an “Auténtica Antecedente Penal para el Extranjero”. See Honduras criminal record certificate.
- The copia de folio from the Registro Nacional de las Personas (RNP) is authenticated at the RNP’s Secretaría General in Tegucigalpa. See copia de folio.
How to request the apostille online
Steps per the SRECI / Gobierno Digital instructions:
- Generate the TGR-1 receipt at tgr1.sefin.gob.hn/tgr1/tgr with your personal details, institución 80, rubro 12120. SRECI notes you do not need to print the receipt; the generated number is enough.
- Pay the receipt. The instructions say it can be paid “en cualquier agencia bancaria” (at any bank branch) or online through financial institutions that offer the service. They do not say whether a US card or US bank is accepted. Keep the proof of payment.
- Create your account on the SOL portal: “Iniciar trámite”, then “Regístrese”. An email arrives to validate the account.
- Start the request. Under “Trámites vigentes”, choose “Iniciar nuevo trámite” and “Auténticas y Apostillas”.
- Fill in Asunto and Detalle. In Asunto, the number of documents. In Detalle, the type of each document and the country it is going to. If documents go to different countries, state each destination.
- Upload a single PDF with all documents plus the TGR-1 proof of payment. The instructions’ example combines a birth certificate, a criminal record, a university degree and a study certificate into one file.
- Save and review. While the request is “En Preparación” you can correct it. When everything is right, choose “Presentar para Revisión”; the status changes to “Presentado”.
- Track it. The portal shows the responsible official, has messaging for questions, and emails you each time the request moves forward.
- Receive the apostille. Per SRECI, it arrives by email “en formato totalmente electrónico”, ready to print and attach to the physical document.
An outdated link on SRECI’s FAQ page
SRECI’s FAQ page links the portal at a gestion.gobiernodigital.gob.hn address that did not load when checked on October 3, 2026. The link SRECI’s own site publishes (“SIGOB | Trámites Gobierno Digital Honduras”) goes to tramitedigital.sreci.gob.hn/SOL, which is the one used in this guide.
In person, in Tegucigalpa
For someone filing in person in Honduras, SRECI’s FAQ page describes four steps: confirm the original is legalized by the corresponding institution; pay the TGR-1 rubro 12120 at any bank branch; hand in the documents at the window, Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., where you get a claim receipt; and collect the document, which “se realiza en un día” (is delivered in one day). SRECI’s website places the ministry on Bulevar Kuwait, next to the Supreme Court of Justice, in Tegucigalpa.
Translations approved by SRECI
SRECI also offers Certificación de Traducción, a service to review, correct and approve translations of official and private administrative documents. On the portal, the requirements are the TGR payment receipt, the translated documents and the originals. For in-person filing, its FAQ page lists a TGR-1 of L 100.00 per document (checked October 3, 2026). Among its tips: do not scan signatures into the translation (write “firma ilegible” instead) and translate the word stamp on English-language apostilles as “timbre”.
What this guide does not cover
- US documents going to Honduras (for example, a state marriage certificate): those are apostilled on the US side. See how to apostille a US document. To register in Honduras a marriage or death that took place in the US, see marriage registration and death registration.
- How long the apostille is valid: SRECI does not publish a validity period.
- Paying from the US: no official source checked says whether the TGR-1 accepts US cards or banks.
Your US immigration status
The requirements SRECI publishes are the authenticated Honduran document and the proof of payment. They do not include any US immigration documents.
