Registering a US marriage in Honduras: the two RNP routes
A marriage of Hondurans celebrated in the United States is registered with Honduras’ Registro Nacional de las Personas (RNP), which publishes two routes: “vía Consulado” and “vía Secretaría General del RNP”. On both, the documents are filed at the RNP Secretaría General in the Villatoro building, bulevar Morazán, Tegucigalpa, by the interested parties or a legal attorney-in-fact (the “vía Consulado” sheet also allows a relative or a representative), and no TGR-RNP fee is paid (undated RNP requirement sheets, checked October 3, 2026). If the certificate is in English, the Foreign Ministry (SRECI) charges L. 100.00 per document to approve the translation (fee published by SRECI, checked October 3, 2026).
The RNP’s marriage page puts the rule this way: “Todo matrimonio o unión de hecho que de acuerdo a la ley se celebre debe inscribirse en el Registro Civil Municipal” (every marriage or common-law union celebrated under the law must be recorded in the municipal civil registry).
Costs and timing
| Item | What the official source publishes (checked October 3, 2026) |
|---|---|
| RNP registration (both routes) | “No paga TGR-RNP” — no TGR-RNP fee (undated RNP sheets) |
| Translation approval at SRECI | L. 100.00 per document, TGR-1 receipt (SRECI FAQ) |
| Apostille on the US certificate | Charged by the US authority; see apostilling a document |
| RNP processing time | Not published |
The two routes the RNP publishes
| “Vía Consulado” route | “Vía Secretaría General del RNP” route | |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate | “Certificado de matrimonio extendida por el consulado del país donde se celebró el acto” | “Certificación de matrimonio autenticado o apostillado por la Embajada de Honduras en el lugar donde se casaron y por Relaciones Exteriores” |
| Translation | Not mentioned | “Si viene en idioma extranjero traducir y sellar en Relaciones Exteriores” |
| Birth certificates | Recent, of the Honduran spouses | Current, of the Honduran spouses |
| Who files | Interested party, relative, representative or legal attorney-in-fact | Legal attorney-in-fact or the interested parties |
| Application addressed to | The RNP Commissioners | The RNP Permanent Commission |
| Copies | Original and copy of every document | Photocopy of every document |
| Afterwards | Windows in the Villatoro building | The Secretaría General issues a communication taken to the municipal civil registry where the marriage will be recorded |
The consular sheet does not explain which consular certificate it means. If your case does not clearly fit one of the two sheets, ask the RNP before sending documents to Honduras.
About the phrase “autenticado o apostillado”
The Secretaría General sheet puts authentication by the Honduran Embassy and the apostille in a single phrase, and adds “por Relaciones Exteriores”. We do not turn that into a rule. What is published: Honduras has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since September 30, 2004 (Hague Conference status table), as has the United States. How a US document is apostilled is covered in our guide to apostilling a document. Confirm with the RNP which legalization it accepts for your certificate.
Documents
“Vía Consulado” route (RNP sheet):
- Marriage certificate issued by the consulate of the country where the marriage took place.
- Recent birth certificate of the Honduran spouses.
- Appearance of the interested party, a relative, a representative or a legal attorney-in-fact.
- ID of the person filing, plus a carta poder if they are a representative or attorney-in-fact.
- Application completed at the Secretaría General, addressed to the RNP Commissioners.
- Original and copy of every document.
“Vía Secretaría General del RNP” route (RNP sheet):
- Marriage certificate authenticated or apostilled (wording quoted above).
- Spanish translation sealed at the Foreign Ministry, if it is in another language.
- Current birth certificate of the Honduran spouses.
- Photocopy of every document.
- Application addressed to the RNP Permanent Commission, by a legal attorney-in-fact or by the interested parties.
The US marriage certificate is ordered in the US; see vital records by state. The Honduran birth certificate is covered in Honduran birth certificate from the US.
Step by step
- Order the marriage certificate from the US office that issues it.
- Legalize it according to the RNP sheet you use (apostille or authentication; see above).
- Have it translated and the translation approved by SRECI. For in-person filing, SRECI’s FAQ page says to first pay a TGR-1 receipt of L. 100.00 per document at any bank branch except Ficensa, then attach that receipt to the photocopies and translations handed in at SRECI windows 6 and 7. SRECI’s online portal lists a “Certificación de Traducción” procedure that asks for the TGR payment receipt, the translated documents and the originals: tramitedigital.sreci.gob.hn. SRECI does not say whether the TGR-1 can be paid from the US.
- Get recent birth certificates for the Honduran spouses.
- If you will not travel, grant a power of attorney to a relative or representative in Honduras; see Honduran power of attorney at a consulate.
- File everything at the RNP Secretaría General, Villatoro building, bulevar Morazán, Tegucigalpa, with originals, copies and the application addressed to the RNP.
- Secretaría General route: with the communication the RNP issues, present the documents at the municipal civil registry where the marriage will be recorded. The sheet cites Article 66 of the RNP Law.
What the RNP does not offer from the US
The RNP sheets only describe filing in person in Tegucigalpa. They mention no online filing, no mail filing and no filing at a consulate in the US for the registration itself. What they do provide for is someone else filing on your behalf: on the “vía Consulado” sheet, a relative, a representative or a legal attorney-in-fact with a carta poder; on the “vía Secretaría General” sheet, a legal attorney-in-fact.
The constancia de soltería is a different procedure
If what you need is the opposite — a document stating that you are single — the RNP issues a constancia de soltería. According to its requirement sheet, a TGR-01 receipt addressed to the RNP for Lps. 200.00 is paid at any bank branch, showing the applicant’s full name and identity number, and the interested person presents the paid receipt at the municipal civil registry of their community (undated RNP sheet, checked October 3, 2026). The sheet describes no channel from abroad.
Your US immigration status
The RNP sheets for this procedure ask for no US immigration document: they ask for the marriage certificate, the Honduran spouses’ birth certificates and the ID of the person filing.
RNP contact
The RNP publishes the email centrodecontacto@rnp.hn and the phone number 2247-9898 (as shown on its site). For translations and apostilles, SRECI publishes apostillas.traducciones@sreci.gob.hn.
