Register US-born child for Honduras dual nationality
Children born in the United States to Honduras-citizen parents are entitled to dual nationality — US citizenship by birthright (14th Amendment) and Honduras citizenship by descent. To exercise the Honduras citizenship, you register the child’s birth at the nearest Honduras consulate.
Why register your US-born child
Registering provides the child with:
- A Honduras birth registration certificate (an official civil-registry document of Honduras)
- Eligibility to apply for a Honduras passport (a separate procedure)
Dual nationality — the US position
8 U.S.C. 1481 lists acts by which a US citizen can lose US nationality, and they count only if done voluntarily with the intention of giving it up; registering a child’s birth with another country is not among them, and the listed acts that involve another country’s nationality (naturalization on one’s own application, or an oath of allegiance) apply only after age 18 (text of the law). See also the US Department of State page on dual nationality.
Required documents
The Honduran embassy also requires all documents in original form, not just the birth certificate (checked October 17, 2026).
The Embassy of Honduras lists (as of October 3, 2026):
- Appointment confirmation (comprobante de cita)
- Honduran DNI or valid passport of both parents — a non-Honduran parent brings their own valid passport
- Child’s original US birth certificate, apostilled by the state where the child was born — every foreign birth certificate must be apostilled regardless of age, and without the apostille the procedure cannot be done
- Birth details — time of birth, weight and blood type
- Fee — none: the embassy lists the procedure at US$0 and says it is completely free (totalmente gratuito)
Step-by-step process
The ACOS consular appointment portal states that booking an appointment is free and depends on available spaces at the consular office where the procedure will be requested (checked October 16, 2026).
- Schedule appointment at your local Honduras consulate (online portal)
- Gather documents per checklist above
- Apostille the US birth certificate in the state where the child was born — without it the consulate cannot register the birth (see apostille process); the embassy suggests checking with that state whether the apostille can be requested online, needs an appointment and what it costs
- Attend the appointment — check with your consulate in advance whether the child must be present
- Submit documents — the Embassy of Honduras lists this procedure at US$0
- Same-day registration — the birth is registered on the day of your appointment
- Receive the original Honduran birth certificate (partida de nacimiento) and the registration receipt signed by the parents at the end of the appointment
- Apply for Honduras passport (optional, separate appointment) using the new birth registration
Children born outside marriage (and other family configurations)
The Embassy of Honduras describes consular birth registration as available for a person born abroad when the father or mother is Honduran — one Honduran parent is enough — from birth until just before age 21. From age 21 on, the registration must be done directly in Honduras through a lawyer. For adoption, surrogacy or other special family situations, ask the Honduras consulate before the appointment.
After registration
Once the child’s Honduras citizenship is registered:
- The child can be issued a Honduras passport (separate consular appointment)
When the child is older, they can register to vote in Honduras elections from abroad if Honduras allows it.
