Voting from the US — Honduras elections from abroad
Honduran citizens living in the United States can vote from abroad in general elections, in person and only for President and Presidential Designates, at voting centers the National Electoral Council (CNE) authorizes under Honduras’s Electoral Law; the CNE sets the details for each election.
This page summarizes voting-from-abroad procedures categorically. For each specific election, verify current rules and deadlines with Honduras’s National Electoral Council (CNE) — registration windows close weeks or months before election day, and missing the deadline means you cannot vote.
What elections you can vote in
Honduras’s Electoral Law (Decreto 35-2021, Art. 80) lets the National Electoral Council (CNE) authorize voting centers abroad so that Hondurans living outside the country can vote in general elections, only for President and Presidential Designates (Designados a la Presidencia). Congress, municipal and Central American Parliament seats are not on the ballot abroad.
Voter registration
Do not leave it late. Under Honduras’s Electoral Law, domicile-update requests filed up to 15 days before the official call to primary and general elections are incorporated into the voter list (Art. 100), and the CNE must deliver the definitive voter list to the political parties 75 days before primary and general elections (Art. 106).
What the law describes:
- DNI — the voter census is built from the RNP’s data on citizens who have applied for the national ID (Art. 83)
- Domicile-update form (formulario de actualización domiciliaria) — declared under oath, signed and fingerprinted before the municipal civil registrar or an office the CNE enables (Art. 99)
How voters abroad are assigned to the centers the CNE authorizes is set by the CNE for each election. The CNE’s site could not be read on October 3, 2026, so confirm the procedure with the CNE.
How you vote
Honduras’s vote abroad is in person, at voting centers the CNE authorizes abroad, in the general election (Art. 80). As of October 3, 2026 we found no multi-day voting window, postal ballot or internet voting in the Electoral Law.
Identification at the polling station
Bring your DNI. The Electoral Law has the voting-table president ask each voter to present their national identification document (DNI) (Art. 263), and Art. 80 applies the Law’s rules to voting centers abroad. Confirm with the CNE before election day whether any other document is accepted abroad.
Does voting in a Honduras election affect US citizenship?
Voting in a foreign election is not among the acts that US law says can cost a US citizen their nationality, and those acts count only if done with the intention of giving up US nationality (8 U.S.C. 1481). We found no official source on whether voting abroad has any effect on a non-citizen’s US immigration status, so we make no claim either way.
