Peru consular ID? Peruvian consulates issue the DNI instead — how it works in the US

Short answer: Peru does not issue a consular ID card. If you searched for a “Peru matrícula consular,” that document does not exist — the matrícula consular is Mexico’s card, and Peru never created an equivalent. What Peruvian consulates in the US offer instead is something arguably more useful: they process Peru’s actual national ID, the DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad), on behalf of RENIEC (Registro Nacional de Identificación y Estado Civil).

What Peruvian consulates in the US actually issue

Peruvian consulates act as RENIEC service points abroad. As of June 12, 2026, the core DNI services available through US consulates are:

  • DNI renewal — replacing an expired DNI, issued as the electronic DNIe
  • DNI duplicate — replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged card
  • Address change — updating your registered address on the DNI

First-time DNIs and the full service menu are not uniform across consulates. Before traveling to a consulate, confirm with that specific post which DNI services it currently processes.

DNI Biofacial: renew remotely, pick up at a US consulate

RENIEC’s DNI Biofacial app lets Peruvians abroad complete a DNI renewal remotely using facial biometrics, with pickup of the physical document at a participating consulate. As of June 12, 2026, the participating US pickup posts are:

What to show a US bank, DMV, or landlord

Because Peru has no consular card, the question becomes: which Peruvian document works as ID inside the US?

  • US banks: there is no documented US-bank acceptance of the Peruvian DNI. Under USA PATRIOT Act Section 326 and its implementing rule (31 CFR 1020.220), each bank sets its own customer-identification policy on foreign IDs — only Mexico’s matrícula consular has documented mass acceptance (GAO-04-881: 160+ institutions).
