Ecuador Pensionista Visa for US Retirees

Overview

Ecuador Pensionista Visa for US citizens with pension income. No minimum age, popular with cost-of-living considerations. Path to citizenship after 3 years residency.

Income requirement: 3x the SBU (the durable rule)

The pensionista income floor is pegged to Ecuador’s unified basic salary (SBU — Salario Básico Unificado), not a fixed dollar amount:

  • Rule: 3x the SBU per month, plus US$250/month for each dependent
  • SBU for 2026: US$482 → floor = US$1,446/month (Ecuador uses the US dollar, so no exchange-rate conversion applies)
  • The SBU resets every January 1, so the dollar floor moves each year — recompute 3x the SBU in force when you apply

Visa fees: US$50 application + US$270 issuance. Applicants 65 and older get a 50% discount on the fees.
