Required documents

  • Current US passport
  • SSA letter confirming lifetime pension
  • FBI background check apostilled + translated to Spanish
  • Birth certificate apostilled + translated
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable) apostilled + translated
  • Medical certificate
  • 2 passport photos
  • Migration fee payment

The process

  1. Start in Guatemala (no need for consular visa first)
  2. Submit to IGM (Instituto Guatemalteco de Migración) in Guatemala City
  3. Wait 3-6 months for resolution
  4. Receive Temporary Residence Card — validity 2 years, renewable
  5. After 5 years total: eligible for Permanent Residency
