How to locate or contact a detainee

ICE says outgoing phone calls are allowed seven days a week, 8:30 a.m.–11 a.m., 1 p.m.–4 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.–11 p.m., as collect calls or using funds on detainees’ phone accounts (checked October 20, 2026).

To locate someone in ICE custody, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator System at locator.ice.gov. You will need the person’s A-number (Alien Registration Number) and country of birth, or their full name, country of birth, and date of birth.

To ask whether someone is held here, call the number ICE publishes for detainee information: (417) 868-4040. Have the detainee’s full name, alien registration number (A-number), date of birth and country of birth ready. Detainees cannot receive incoming calls — they place outgoing calls themselves. Have the person’s biographical information ready when you call (full legal name and any aliases, date of birth, and country of birth). Confirm current hours by calling (417) 868-4040 or checking the official ICE page linked above.

Phone accounts, text messaging and personal mail

ICE (checked October 23, 2026):

  • ICE lists three ways to create an IC Solutions prepaid account: online through IC Solutions, through the ICS Mobile app, or by calling 888-506-8407.
  • ICE says text messaging is available through viapath Technologies and lists 800-205-5510 for that service.
  • ICE says incoming personal mail can be a postcard, a 2-page letter (front and back), or a greeting card.
  • ICE says personal letters, pictures and drawings are scanned and digitally delivered via tablet; no personal mail is accepted at the Greene County Jail address.
  • ICE identifies the active Greene County population search page or (417) 868-4040 as ways to find the CFN or jacket number.

Sending mail, commissary funds, and personal items

ICE’s facility page gives these routes (checked October 17, 2026):

  • Personal mail: Greene County Jail; Detainee Name; Detainee Jacket / CFN Number; PO BOX 247; Phoenix, MD 21131.
  • Legal mail: Greene County Jail; Detainee Name; Detainee Jacket / CFN Number; 1199 N Haseltine Road; Springfield, MO 65802.
  • Commissary deposits: ICE specifies the jail-lobby kiosk or accesscorrections.com for the detainee’s Trust Fund Account (TFA). ICE says no monetary items in any form are accepted through the mail for deposit in that account.

ICE lists each facility’s format on that facility’s page at ice.gov. Under ICE’s National Detention Standards, Revised 2019, §5.1(E), incoming general mail is opened and inspected for contraband, and outgoing general mail may be inspected and read if it is addressed to another detainee or staff have reason to believe it threatens the facility’s security or order, endangers someone, or could facilitate criminal activity. Only special correspondence — mail to or from attorneys and other legal representatives, courts and judges, government attorneys, embassies and consulates, the President and Vice President of the United States, members of Congress, the Department of Justice (including the immigration courts), DHS (including ICE/ERO, IHSC, CRCL and the DHS Inspector General), grievance administrators, and the news media — may not be read or copied by staff. Incoming special correspondence is inspected for contraband in the detainee’s presence; outgoing special correspondence is not opened, inspected or read, and if a need exists, any inspection takes place in the detainee’s presence. The standard limits any inspection to detecting physical contraband and confirming that enclosures qualify as special correspondence. Mail counts as special correspondence only if the envelope unambiguously identifies the title and office of the sender (incoming mail) or of the addressee (outgoing mail). Rules for commissary (account) deposits and permitted personal items vary by facility, and so does the number that handles them — ICE names a separate facility mail clerk on some facility pages. This facility’s deposit route, accepted form of payment and contacts are in the Sending Items to Detainees section of its own ICE page (linked above).

ICE states that there is no fax machine at this location (checked October 20, 2026).

Detainees have the right to speak with an attorney, and attorney–client visits and calls are confidential. For information about a case before the immigration court (EOIR), EOIR’s automated line 1-800-898-7180 (toll-free, 24 hours a day, English and Spanish) gives the next hearing date and case status; callers enter the 9 digits of the A-number, without the letter A (EOIR, checked October 24, 2026). For a matter before the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), the main line of EOIR (the Justice Department agency the BIA belongs to) is (703) 305-0289. Applications for relief from removal must be filed directly with the immigration court handling the case. If you cannot afford an attorney, the immigration court can provide a list of pro bono legal service providers — see the related resources below.

ICE inspection record

ICE’s Office of Detention Oversight (ODO) inspected Greene County Jail in Springfield from April 8 to May 7, 2026, including a one-day site visit on May 7, 2026 (ODO report, Inspection 2026-006-126). It was ODO’s first compliance inspection of the jail and the most recent report for it on ICE’s ODO facility inspections page when we checked on October 15, 2026. What the report says:

  • Who runs it: the jail opened in 2022, is owned by Greene County and is operated by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office; ERO began housing detainees there in 2025 under ERO Chicago. It is a U.S. Marshals Service contracted facility where ICE is an authorized user, operating under the USMS Federal Performance Based Detention Standards (FPBDS, May 2025), and it holds male and female detainees of low through high security classification for periods longer than 72 hours. ERO deportation officers are on site full-time Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Services: the Sheriff’s Office provides food, Advanced Correctional Healthcare provides medical care and Stellar Services provides commissary. The jail holds no outside accreditations.
  • Findings: compliant with 20 of 21 standards; 1 deficiency: the jail issued men two pairs of underwear and women three pairs, instead of the seven pairs the standard requires. ODO interviewed seven detainees; none alleged discrimination, mistreatment or abuse, and all reported satisfaction with facility services.
  • Rating: Superior.

ODO redacts bed-capacity and population counts in the published report; for population, see the ICE statistics box above.
