For minute-by-minute numbers, the official source is bwt.cbp.gov (no login needed) and CBP’s CBP Link app. The CBP One app was discontinued in January 2025; its successor CBP Home serves other purposes — for wait times use bwt.cbp.gov or CBP Link.

Lane types explained

  • Standard lanes: open to everyone; the longest wait.
  • Ready Lane: for RFID-chipped documents — passport card, green cards issued since 2010, border crossing cards, enhanced driver’s licenses (EDL). Usually faster than standard.
  • SENTRI: the dedicated Trusted Traveler lane on the Mexican border — shortest wait. Requires approved membership.
  • FAST: commercial lane for certified carriers.
  • Pedestrian: the walking line; big ports also run a pedestrian Ready Lane.

Trusted Traveler Programs (2026 fees)

Since October 1, 2024, Global Entry, NEXUS, and SENTRI all cost $120 for a 5-year membership (FAST remains $50). Applicants under 18 are free when a parent or legal guardian is a member or applies at the same time. Apply at ttp.cbp.dhs.gov — background check plus an in-person interview.

Documents to cross

  • US citizens: passport, passport card, or enhanced driver’s license (EDL).
  • Permanent residents: green card (cards issued since 2010 work in the Ready Lane).
  • Visa holders: passport + valid visa; check your I-94 record after every entry.
  • Border crossing card (BCC): valid as a crossing document for Mexican citizens within the border zone.

If you live in the US without permanent status — DACA, TPS, a pending asylum case, or no status — leaving the country can permanently affect your case or block your return. Talk to an immigration attorney before traveling. See traveling to your home country from the US and how to find an immigration attorney.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I check live border wait times?
The official source is bwt.cbp.gov, which works in any browser with no login, plus CBP’s CBP Link app. Most ports update every 15-60 minutes. Each port page on this site shows a daily snapshot of the same feed.
What happened to the CBP One app?
CBP One was discontinued in January 2025 and relaunched in March 2025 as CBP Home, which serves different purposes. For wait times, I-94, and crossings, use bwt.cbp.gov or the CBP Link app, announced by CBP in June 2025.
Which lane should I use if I don't have SENTRI?
If your document has an RFID chip (passport card, green card issued since 2010, border crossing card), use the Ready Lane — usually faster than standard at no extra cost. SENTRI ($120 for 5 years since October 2024) is the fastest option for frequent crossers.
Do port hours change?
Yes. Several ports close overnight and some change hours with seasons, staffing, or weather. Each port page shows the hours reported in CBP’s feed, but verify at bwt.cbp.gov before traveling, especially on holidays.
