Free tax help (VITA + TCE) in the US — by state
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) sites prepare federal AND state returns free, by IRS-certified volunteers. VITA serves people who generally make $69,000 or less, people with disabilities, and limited-English speakers; TCE serves people 60 and older. For ITIN filers VITA is especially valuable: volunteers are trained on ITIN returns, and many sites are Certifying Acceptance Agents that can file your W-7 application at the same visit.
Two ways to find a site: the IRS VITA/TCE locator (updated February-April each season), or by phone at 800-906-9887 (AARP Tax-Aide for TCE: 888-227-7669).
